The Shiba Inu is an athletic, medium size dog with a bold and spirited personality. Shibas should be alert and confident. Shibas are a tough breed that was originally bred for flushing and hunting birds, small game, and occasionally boar. Shibas are now primarily companion dogs and have become the most popular companion dog in their country of origin, Japan. They can be aloof towards strangers, but are loyal companions once you earn their love and respect. They are very independent and typically like to stay as clean as possible. They are not for most first time dog owners and require very consistent training and socialization.
